What is Cotton Rope?

Cotton is one of the best roping materials available today.  The production of cotton rope begins with the soft, fluffy fiber growing around the seed of the cotton plant.  These cotton fibers offer three advantages: they are naturally fast-drying, offer high-strength levels, and will not overstretch, leaving you with super-soft yet extremely durable roping material ideal for several applications.

While some roping companies sell “cotton rope” blended with materials with polyester or acrylic, SGT KNOTS 100% cotton rope is TRULY made from cotton and only cotton.  And since our rope is untreated, unbleached, and undyed, it will easily absorb any color you choose.  It is just another way we are committed to giving our customers the best roping products on the market.

Types of Cotton Rope

There are two general kinds of cotton rope, twisted and braided cotton rope.  While both types are used for similar purposes, they both have their own strengths and weaknesses. 

Twisted Cotton Rope is made by simply taking the cotton fibers and twisting them into strands, then twisting these strands into rope.  Twisted rope is the stronger cotton rope option, making it better for outdoor applications.  It is also easy to splice, offers more stretch than braided rope but is less flexible, and tends to kink easily.

Braided Cotton Rope uses cotton fibers braided into tube-like braids for a smoother, more flexible nature cotton roping option than twisted rope. Braided cotton rope is, however, more difficult to splice, and offers less stretch than its counterpart.
