Discover Tendon Ropes

When it comes to climbing, you need the best gear possible. Whether you're hitting the rock wall at the gym or climbing a tree, the right equipment can make all the difference, all while keeping you safe and comfortable the entire time. Tendon makes great gear for Rock Climbing, Work-At-Height, and Arborist professionals.

Although there are tons of climbing gear brands out there, one stands above the rest, and SGT Knots is proud to feature its wide selection of products. Tendon brand ropes and equipment are designed to help you conquer any challenge you may face, no matter how big or small. From ropes to carabiners, from sling to saddles, each piece is designed to be as reliable and durable as possible. Tendon has a rich history in pushing the boundaries with innovative designs in their gear.

The Tendon brand has different styles and constructions of rope that are innovated to give the right amount of comfort and consistency for the job.  Between our selection of dynamic or static ropes, meant for either rock climbing, work at height, or arborist, you can pick the thickness and length necessary for your next outing.  So, let's take a closer look at Tendon brand ropes and equipment and see how well it works in the field.

Climbing Trees Isn't Just for Kids

Climbing Trees Isn't Just for Kids

Tree climbing can be a serious process, particularly if you're doing it professionally. Also, you must understand that tree-climbing ropes and accessories are much different than those you use for rock climbing. As a general rule, arborist rope should be more static, although you'll use dynamic versions for rigging the tree while you work.

Tendon offers a variety of tree-climbing gear, all marked by the Tendon Timber name. Some essential gear you'll need to take on the tallest of trees includes:

  • Prusik Eye-to-Eye Cord
  • Throw Line and Throw Bag
  • Double-Braid High-Strength Rope
  • Saddle
  • Accessory Cord

Climbing a tree is much different than climbing rocks because you have to deal with different trunk thicknesses, branches, and unique tree types. So, the ropes and equipment you use are unique. For example, while it may be tempting to reuse a rock-climbing rope for a tree, it's much better to use arborist rope (like the EVO 11.5 Orange/Yellow Braided Rope). Because this rope is designed for trees, it's more resistant to the wear and tear you'll experience on a climb.

Tree climbing also requires some unique equipment that you wouldn't use to climb a mountain or rock face. For example, the Tendon Timber Throw Line and Throw Bag are designed to help you rig ropes around branches or the trunk of the tree itself. Without a throw bag, your line could get caught in the branches easily. Also, other types of rope may start to fray after rubbing against rough tree bark.

Even the Tendon Timber Saddle is designed for long days of climbing and working on trees. With extra padding where you need it most and quick-release buckles, you can sit in the tree for hours on end without getting sore.

Some climbing equipment is still the same, though, such as the Tendon Carabiner or Accessory Cord. These pieces allow you to rig your ropes as needed during the climb so everything stays accessible and safe throughout the process

Tame the Mountain With Rock Climbing Gear

Rock climbing is an entirely different beast, particularly because each surface is different from the last. While trees are pretty standard in that they have trunks, branches, and leaves, every rock face or mountain has unique demands, such as rock angle, sport vs trad, height of the rock face, and more. You have to be well-equipped to handle whatever obstacle stands in your way by planning ahead with the right equipment. For example, you can use Tendon Master Dynamic Rope throughout your climb. The master pro rope is also treated to repel moisture and dirt, granting it the highest level of protection from moisture and other weather conditions.

Some basic Tendon rock climbing gear includes:

  • Static and Dynamic Ropes
  • Nylon Slings
  • Sit Harnesses
  • Hand Ascenders
  • Accessory Cords

Similar to some of the static ropes for work at height, Tendon labels some of its gear under the "Canyon" line. Canyoneering has its own unique conditions that can make packing the right rope essential. For example, you can use Tendon Canyon Dry Rope if you're worried about wet conditions due to a river running through the canyon or cave.

As far as saddles, you can choose the Tendon Canyon Sit Harness for rappelling or the Tendon Storm Harness for a more all-purpose model. These saddles are comfortable, but they're not designed for sitting for long periods. Instead, they're built to secure you in place more easily and provide added protection.

Slings and Accessories

Slings are also essential when rock climbing to help straighten your line and decrease friction across the rock face. Tendon offers multiple sling options, including a standard nylon sling, a Dyneema sling, and a Quickdraw sling. As a rule, the more slings you have, the more prepared you are for the variety of anchors you may have to build, so you should always bring a variety and tackle the mountain or cliff face however you see fit. Many climbers won't leave the ground without at least a dozen slings.

Outfitting Yourself With Tendon Gear

One of the great things about Tendon brand ropes is that there are so many options to choose from. This way, you can get the right rope for your specific needs, whether you're climbing a mountain or a tree in your backyard. However, because there are so many different types, it can be hard to choose the "best" one, particularly if you're still new to the world of climbing.

So, here are some general guidelines on how to choose the best Tendon braided ropes and equipment for your needs.

  • Rock vs. Arborist Climbing - As we mentioned, there are noticeable differences between ropes used for trees and those used for rocks. If you are a beginner climber, make sure you do enough research before buying a rope that may not fit all your needs. What length do you need? Do you need it dry treated? What diameter are most people using in your area? Either ask us or a friend for advice to make sure you end up with the right gear!

  • Static vs. Dynamic Ropes - A static rope doesn't have much "give," meaning it won't stretch and will hold its shape. Dynamic rope is stretchier, although the amount of give depends on the exact product. When rock climbing, you need a dynamic rope typically. Dynamic ropes are designed to absorb the impact of a fall. Static ropes are used when to hold you in place at height. In most cases, you are using static ropes to prevent a fall, not stay safe during one.
  • Thickness - Thicker ropes are more durable and resistant to wear and tear, but they're also heavier. Thinner ropes are perfect for long-distance climbing since they won't weigh you down. However, you want to match the thickness according to your climbing destination if possible.

  • Length - Shorter ropes are ideal for gym climbing, while longer ropes are ideal for use in the field. Many climbing ropes will have a midpoint marker so you know how much is left and can plan accordingly. A rope should be more than twice as long as your climbing route, so a 40-meter route would need an 80+ meter rope. This is so you have enough rope to make it up the climb and still be lowered back down!

  • Dry Treatment - Most climbers avoid staying out in inclement weather, so they'll pack up and go home when it starts raining. However, if you're climbing mountains in the winter, you can't avoid storms and various weather conditions. In that case, it's best to use dry-treated rope that won't absorb water and make it less effective. For example, wet ropes don't have as much give, and they can freeze and become stiff in cold temperatures. Some climbers like to stick with dry ropes simply because humidity and groundwater can still absorb into the rope and make it heavy while hiking in/out.

Tendon makes it easy to compare different rope options and pick the ones you need for your next excursion. SGT Knots is proud to carry so many Tendon braided ropes and climbing gear, and we invite you to browse our entire selection and contact us when you're ready to order.
