What is a Slip Knot & How to Tie a Slip Knot

A slip knot is one of eight basic knots and one of the most frequently tied knots.  While slip knots are similarly structured to noose knots, the slip knot is meant to be used as a temporary stop that easily unravels (when you want it to) for use of the string or rope later on, and unlike a noose knot does not tighten when tension is applied to it. 

Furthermore, slip knots can be used in a wide range of situations, from crafting to rock climbing, to boating and beyond.  Whether it is being used as the first loop in knitting, as a temporary stopper knot in boating, or an animal snare in survival - if you need an easy quick-release knot, the slip knot is probably the knot for the job. Step-By-Step: How to Tie a Slip Knot

1. Form a look near the end of the rope
2. Form a bight (curved section or slack part between two ends of rope) with the short end
3. Tuck the bight through the loop and tighten
4. To untie, pull the tail end. This will withdraw the loop and cause the knot to unravel instantly.
