Throw Lines FAQ

What is an Arborist Throw Line?

An arborist throw line is an essential tool in the tree-climbing work of arborists. It helps climbers ascend, descend, and move around the tree safely and efficiently. An arborist throw line works in conjunction with a throw weight and launcher to make climbing easier.

How to Use Arborist Throw Line

Keep reading for a breakdown on how to use arborist throw lines:

  • Begin by finding a suitable anchor point and firmly tying one end of your line to the anchor point.
  • Attach a weight to the other end of your rope. Make sure the weight is smooth and round, as this will help with aerodynamics when casting it into the tree crown.
  • Measure your spreader for the chosen distance before holding onto the weight and swinging it in an arc towards its intended location in the tree crown before letting it go.
  • Repeat this process multiple times until you have your desired amount of throw lines in the canopy.

What is the Best Size Throw Line for Arborists?

The best size and weight of your throw line depends on the situation. Generally, a 180-foot line with a 1.8mm-2.2mm diameter is a popular choice.
